José returns to Cape Verde and finds his community transformed. The beach where he first played football has disappeared; its sand has been removed and now it’s nothing but rocks and pebbles. Those who once made a living from fishing are now selling sand just to survive. Where once there was enough fish for several fishing families, now every day is a struggle to find enough to eat. The reasons are all over the archipelago: EU ships are returning home with fish from Cape Verde. Overfishing by European boats has serious and far-reaching consequences, so why doesn’t anyone question this? Sandgrains is a film about what happens when people start asking a simple question: why?
